Challenging Urawa Reds as a culmination before the league suspension

Sec. 13 of the league will be held as a home game following the previous round. Urawa Reds will face off against Ajinomoto at Ajinomoto Stadium. In the previous round, they achieved a dramatic come-from-behind victory, securing their third consecutive league win. They take confidence in their ability to overcome opponents who rely on solid defense and quick counterattacks, such as Niigata, Sapporo, and Tosu, and aim for further consecutive victories. At the same time, this match serves as the culmination of what they have built up before the break and they want to turn it into a result.

Urawa, on the other hand, currently has 3 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses in 6 matches. They are in 5th place with the same 21 points as Tokyo. This season, they welcomed Petrovic as their new coach, and players such as forward Popo, midfielder Abe, and defender Makino, who have experience playing overseas, joined the team. With their unique formation of 3-4-2-1, they aim to dominate possession and utilize the mobility of their front line to achieve a high ranking in soccer.

In this match, Tokyo won in last year's Emperor's Cup, but they have not been able to win a league match since 2004. They are an opponent that they cannot shake off their "weakness". However, in all the games so far, the outcome has been determined by the decisive moments, and the accuracy of one play should also be the key in this match. They want to play their own soccer and achieve victory at home by any means necessary, breaking their dishonorable record.

Tokyo, with Watanabe, who scored a hat-trick in the previous match, and Ishikawa also starting. Watanabe plays as the top, with Ishikawa and Lucas on both sides. In addition, Kaga also returned from injury and made it into the lineup for the first time since April 4. Even as the sun sets, the weather is perfect for watching, and a season-high 33,836 people gathered at the stadium, and the match started with Tokyo's kickoff.

To engage in a battle of will and aggression, attacking each other relentlessly

Both teams were aggressive from the start and engaged in an attacking match. Urawa tried to create chances from wide attacks using the MFs Hirakawa and Umezaki as well as exploiting the space between the 2 shadow MFs Kashiwagi and Marcio Richardes. Tokyo also threatened the Urawa goal with their usual passing game.

12 minutes, Lucas cuts back the opponent on the left side and crosses to the far post. Shimma jumps in at the last moment, but narrowly misses. In the 20th minute, Mokuhara on the left side connects with Lucas in front with one touch, receives the return pass, and shoots from the left area. However, the Urawa defender blocks the shot with his body. Ishikawa follows up on the loose ball in the center, but is unable to finish due to a collision with the opponent's defender. In the 23rd minute, Urawa midfielder Kashiwagi makes a move on the left side. Tokyo initially steals the ball, but it is picked up by midfielder Umezaki from the loose ball, who then plays a through pass to midfielder Kashiwagi near the corner of the left area, who takes a powerful shot but misses the target.

Tokyo created a decisive opportunity in the 32nd minute. They swiftly moved forward, with Takahashi's vertical pass skillfully connected by Kajiyama, and Ishikawa sprinted into the left area. The shot, propelled with speed, hit the right post... Takahashi followed up with a middle shot, but it was blocked by Urawa. From the rebounded ball, this time Mokuhara aimed for the goal, but it was caught by the goalkeeper.

Immediately after that, there was a scoring opportunity from Urawa's direct play. FW Popo dropped the vertical pass from DF Makino, who had moved up to the midfield, to left MF Umesaki, who had slipped behind Tokyo's defense. The combination was disrupted, but MF Umesaki's shot was saved by Gonda. In the 44th minute, Urawa suffered a counterattack, and from FW Popo's cross, MF Marcinho Rishardes was allowed to run freely into the right area and unleashed a decisive volley, but Gonda made a great save.

On the other hand, in the first half stoppage time, Tokyo launched a counterattack and Lucas, who broke through on the right front line, made an early cross. It was touched by the opponent's goalkeeper, but Watanabe reacted to the loose ball. He tried to push it in, but... was blocked by the defender. Throughout the match, there was a fast tempo and exciting offensive and defensive play, and the first half ended with a scoreless draw.

Despite conceding the first goal in the final stage, Morishige scores a valuable equalizer! The intense battle ends in the first draw of the season.

In the 47th minute of the second half, Ishikawa made a vertical breakthrough and earned a left corner kick from a cross. In the 49th minute, Watanabe, who had stolen the opponent's clearance, dribbled and took a shot, gradually taking control of the game. Tokyo increased their attacking opportunities with quick passing plays. In the 55th minute, Lucas and Kajiyama connected passes, and Takahashi made a through pass into the penalty area. Mokuhara ran into the goal area, but was cut off by the Urawa defender just before taking a shot, resulting in a corner kick... In the 61st minute, Takahashi, Kajiyama, and Watanabe quickly passed the ball among themselves in their own half, and from Hasegawa's vertical pass, it reached Mokuhara in front of the goal again. However, they missed the timing slightly and couldn't finish the play.

In the 62nd minute, Mokuhara advanced into the left area from a speedy pass work. He created a chance by sending a negative cross in front of the goal, but the force of the pass was slightly strong, and Kajiyama's direct volley went wide... In the 67th minute, Kajiyama passed to Tokunaga, who had dropped the ball from Watanabe, and Kajiyama attracted the opponent's DF and passed to Tokunaga, who advanced one step forward and took a decisive shot, but it crossed the frame... In the 79th minute, Watanabe bypassed Urawa's press in front of the goal, reversed, and aimed for the goal, but was blocked by the DF. Ishikawa, who took the loose ball, aimed from just outside the right area, but the shot that escaped the melee went to the GK...

However, Urawa also made player substitutions to increase the sharpness of their counterattacks. As the intense offensive and defensive battle continued, the game took a turn towards the end. In the 88th minute, Urawa's wave-like attack was thwarted by Tokyo's defense with a throw-in, but this right throw-in was dropped to midfielder Marcinho Lishardes in the area, and midfielder Kashiwagi dribbled towards the center from the loose ball on the right side. He slipped through Tokyo's defense and Marcinho Lishardes in the right area scored... giving up the first goal.

However, without looking down here, immediately counterattacked and in the 90th minute, Ishikawa made a move and earned a corner kick. At this point, Tokyo substituted Hayashi for the injured MF Marcinho. Urawa substituted MF Kojima for MF Marcinho. Immediately after that, Mori Shige scored a goal with a high-headed shot from Ishikawa's right corner kick! They equalized in injury time! After that, both teams continued to attack in search of a winning goal, and near the end of the game, from Urawa's MF UGAJIN's right cross, FW Haraguchi's header hit the right post... but the goal was not scored and the time was up.

Although they couldn't achieve a lead, Tokyo showed their tenacity by equalizing at the last minute. The intense game ended in a draw, the first of the season.

【Player Comment】《Morishige》"As a team, we had many chances and I also wanted to score from set pieces. Ishikawa sent me a good ball in the corner kick, so all I had to do was to put it in. However, it's really disappointing that we couldn't win as a team. It's not bad that we managed to bring it to a draw, but we need to reflect on and make adjustments to the scenes where we conceded goals. Nevertheless, we are currently enjoying playing soccer as a team. We want to continue playing our soccer like today and enjoy it in the ACL as well."

"Mukuhara: "In the second half, we had possession of the ball, but both teams had scoring opportunities and it was even. It became a shootout and the result reflected the performance. The opponent played with a 3-4-2-1 system, so we expected the fullbacks to be the starting point. We tried to touch the ball as much as possible and move forward. We were also conscious of clear plays and combinations, aiming to create goal-scoring opportunities. It's really disappointing that we couldn't finish it off in the end.""

【Summary of Coach Popovic's Press Conference】"I think we had a really wonderful and exciting game. I believe those who watched today's match in Japan would have enjoyed it. Both teams showed high quality and different styles, and they both gave their all. One team focused on counterattacks, but their quality was very high and dangerous. In terms of chances created, it was an evenly matched first half. In the second half, we were able to take control and push forward, but I felt that Urawa also made their intentions clear by substituting FW Haraguchi for FW Popo and initiating counterattacks. We had to constantly be cautious against their high-quality counterattacks."

You should be able to understand how tough and fast-paced the game was, and how it continued at a fast tempo even in the second half, by seeing some of Urawa's players cramping. Although there was also a part where luck helped us, it was a performance that we could have won. Throughout the 90 minutes, I think we were able to fight with a content that was worthy of attracting such a result."

[Summary of Urawa Petrovic's press conference] "I think it was a very good game. Both teams had different styles. One team mainly focused on short passes and played dangerous soccer up to 30 meters in front of our goal. The other team played a soccer that sometimes kicked long balls and approached the goal specifically. I am the coach of Urawa, so my perspective may be biased towards Urawa, but I think it was a game that we had to win. However, it is also soccer that it ended in a draw. Nevertheless, I think we were able to show the supporters a good game today."
