It is the largest international youth tournament in the world, held since 1975, with over 1 million players from 147 countries participating in the event. Notable past participants include Xabi Alonso (Spain), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), and Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), who later became prominent players worldwide.
The team that won the J.League Best Youth Development Club Award participates in the following year's Gothia Cup as the J.League Academy representative team.
