□What is the Tamagawa Classico…
Since the JFL era in 1997, both clubs have been honing their skills as "good rivals" through intense matches and numerous dramatic developments. In particular, in 1999, the first year of J2, Tokyo Gas aimed to join the J1 League and became what is now FC Tokyo, both clubs fought fiercely for promotion and successfully ascended to the J1 League together. Kawasaki Frontale was relegated to J2 League after one year, but they were promoted again in 2005, and both clubs are once again engaged in fierce battles.
In this land divided by the Tama River, the history of competing and improving each other has shown an excitement that is no less than the "derby" held in other cities. And from now on, we will cherish the history of these two clubs and continue this battle as a tradition. The name "Tama River Clasico" was chosen by combining the symbol that separates the two clubs, the Tama River, and the meaning of "clasico" in Spanish, which refers to a traditional match.
The name "Tamagawa Classico" started in 2007, but to honor the history of fierce battles between FC Tokyo and Kawasaki Frontale, we count it as "Tamagawa Classico" from the battles of 1999, the inaugural year of J2. There were a total of 10 matches from 1999 to 2006. In 2007, we started the project and positioned the match on "May 6, 2007," during Kawasaki Frontale's home game as the "11th Tamagawa Classico." Moving forward, both clubs will continue to strive for excellence to build a history of 50, 100, 200 matches... and beyond.
The current match record is FC Tokyo's 11 wins, 9 draws, and 24 losses.
※Both clubs have agreed that only matches in the league will be counted as the Tama River Clasico. Matches in cup competitions, including the Emperor's Cup, will not be counted.
